How to Spot a Roof Leak in

1. Water Stains on Your Ceiling or Walls

The most obvious sign — a brown or yellow water ring on your ceiling or upper walls. This usually means water has already been collecting inside your roof structure for some time. Don't wait. What looks like a small stain can mean significant moisture damage above the drywall.

Important: the leak source on your roof is often not directly above the stain. Water travels along rafters and framing before dripping through. A professional inspection is the only reliable way to find the exact entry point.

2. Missing, Cracked, or Curling Shingles

After a monsoon storm or high wind event, walk around your property and look up at your roofline. Missing shingles are obvious. Cracked or curling shingles are subtler — but just as serious. A shingle that's curling at the edges or has surface cracks is no longer waterproof and will let water in the next time it rains.

3. Granules in Your Gutters

Check your gutters after rain. If you see dark sandy residue that looks like coarse sand or tiny pebbles, those are granules coming off your asphalt shingles. Heavy granule loss means your shingles are near the end of their life — the UV protection is gone and leaks aren't far behind.

4. Daylight Through Your Attic

On a sunny day, go into your attic and look up. If you can see daylight coming through anywhere that isn't a vent, you have a gap, crack, or hole in your roof. Water and pests come through the same openings.

5. Flashing Damage Around Vents and Chimneys

Flashing is the metal sealing around chimneys, vents, skylights, and roof penetrations. In Las Vegas, the extreme heat causes metal to expand and contract constantly, which eventually breaks the waterproof seal. Cracked or lifted flashing is one of the most common sources of roof leaks we see across Las Vegas Valley.

6. Sagging Areas on Your Roofline

A sagging section of roof is serious. It usually means prolonged moisture damage to the decking or structural framing underneath. If your roofline isn't straight, call a roofer immediately — this isn't a wait-and-see situation.
